8/24/12: USA Pro Challenge Stage 5: Hoosier Pass

Tate had the day off from school today and wanted to go up and check out Stage 5 of the USA Pro Challenge, which departed Breckenridge for Colorado Springs. Hoosier Pass was our destination, a 2000′ Category 1 climb up to 11,500′ MSL, and the crowds did not disappoint. Below find a few of my favorites, followed by a great selection of ‘Tate+Crazy people’ pictures. We had such a good time, and even ran into a few Twin Peaks Racing teammates. The highlight of my day, however, was Tate and I getting our picture taken with ‘Antler Man’, who has made himself famous by donning elk and sheep horns while running up the highest mountain passes from the Tour of California to the Tour de France. Dore Holt is from Seattle, and takes time out from work to travel to the big tours, where he can almost always be spotted near the summit of the major climbs. After the peloton passed and the race convoy got off the pass, Tate and I decided to chase down and see if we could find the feed zone and scavange some schwag. I think we did pretty good, and Tate had a ball jumping out of the car trying to grab stuff before other people got it (we did barely lose a BMC musette bag to some dude in a black pickup truck, LOL).

    It is heartwarming to see the fun experiences you guys have with the kids. Those will be the memories the kids(and you) will be left with. The important stuff.

    Hey Dore,

    It was a true honor meeting you, and you need to know my eldest son Reade was so bummed he missed meeting you that day (he was in school). We all watch for you on every mountain pass in every major race, wondering which rack you’ll don for the day.
